| In the 25 years from 1972 to 1996, 1,719 established researchers and academics from the USA received a Humboldt research award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and spent at least one research leave at German universities and research organisations. This project has examined the geographies, experiences, and outcomes related to the transatlantic academic mobility of US Humboldt award winners to the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) by responding to three research questions: (1) What motivated the internationally-renowned researchers to accept the invitation for spending a longer period of time researching in the FRG? (2) What did the US Humboldt award winners do during their research stays in the FRG and what were the most important consequences? (3) What conclusions can be drawn from the experiences of the US Humboldt award winners in the FRG for the role of travel and collaboration in different scientific fields and for the attractiveness of the FRG as a place to pursue science and research? This book offers answers to these research questions based on a mixed methods research approach combining a large-scale postal survey and semi-structured interviews with 61 US senior scientists: Jöns, H.
