New book: De frailes mendicantes a jesuitas expulsos (2026)

Professors Maria Teresa Guerrini (Università di Bologna) and Rafael Ramis Barceló (Universitat de les Illes Balears) have published an impressive new book on the Hispanic doctors of theology at the University of Bologna from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries:

De frailes mendicantes a jesuitas expulsos. Doctores hispanos en Teología en la Universidad de Bolonia (siglos XIV–XVIII) (2026).

The authors offer the first comprehensive reconstruction of Hispanic Doctors of Theology at the University of Bologna, from the foundation of the Faculty of Theology to the end of the eighteenth century. Based on the Acta Collegii Theologici and a wide range of unpublished archival sources preserved in Bologna, it combines prosopographical research with the history of universities, academic mobility, ecclesiastical institutions, and the circulation of knowledge in medieval and early modern Europe. They emphasize that beyond its contribution to the history of theology, the volume aims to shed new light on one of the least explored components of the medieval and early modern university: the Faculty of Theology, its graduates, and their role within the international Republic of Letters.

The book’s findings include a reconstruction of academic networks linking the Iberian kingdoms with Bologna, the identification of a significant Leuven circle within the Bolognese Faculty of Theology, the academic careers of several participants in the Council of Trent, new evidence concerning figures such as Benito Arias Montano and the Neo-Latin poet Domingo Andrés, and the intellectual activity of the expelled Jesuits in eighteenth-century Bologna. The authors hope that this study will be of interest to scholars working on the history of universities, intellectual history, academic mobility, and the transmission of knowledge across Europe.
